For film, television, commercial, and specialty productions, the details on a set matter.

A cigarette burn on the surface of the subway rail. A worn out high-traffic area. A wall that needs to look aged, polished, distressed, industrial, historic, or completely transformed. These finishes may not always be the first thing an audience notices, but they help define the world on screen.

At the FOX Studio Lot, the Paint Department provides the tools, facilities, materials, and experienced support productions need to bring those visual details to life.

Led by Carlos Ochoa, who has been part of the FOX Studio Lot for nearly 30 years, the Paint Department supports a wide range of production needs. From custom paint finishes and color matching to aging, distressing, set painting support by request, scenic finishing by request, and spray booth access, the department is designed to help productions move quickly while achieving the right look for the camera.

Full-Service Paint Support for Studio Productions

The FOX Studio Lot Paint Department offers production-ready paint services for television shows, feature films, commercials, competition shows, live productions, and specialty projects.

Services include:

  • Custom paint finishes
  • Color matching
  • Aging and distressing
  • Specialty surface treatments
  • Set painting support
  • Spray booth access
  • Paint mixing
  • Scenic finishing
  • Material and finish support
  • Fast-turnaround production requests

Every production has different needs. Some projects require clean, polished finishes. Others need sets, props, or scenic elements to look weathered, damaged, heavily used, or period-specific. The Paint Department works with productions to help create the right visual tone for each project. Paint is not just about color. It is about storytelling. The right finish can help establish mood, texture, age, realism, and character within a set. In many cases, these details help actors step more fully into the world of the production and support the overall production design.

"We can service all your production needs whether its TV shows, movies, commercials, anything in particular you need. We’ll help you have a really good experience at FOX."

Built for Speed, Flexibility, and Production Timelines

Productions move fast, and having paint services available directly on the lot can make a major difference.

The FOX Studio Lot Paint Department is stocked and structured to respond quickly to production needs. Instead of waiting on outside vendors or delayed materials, productions can access paint support, equipment, and facilities on-site.

The shop is designed to move quickly, with materials and resources available to help keep productions on schedule. That speed is especially valuable for shows with tight shooting timelines, overnight changes, last-minute set adjustments, or specialty pieces that need to be painted and finished before cameras roll.

For production teams, art departments, construction departments, scenic teams, and set decorators, having a responsive paint department on the lot means fewer delays and more direct support when needs change.

Spray Booth Access for Studio Paint Work

One of the key resources available through the FOX Studio Lot’s Paint Department is spray booth access.

For productions that need to paint, spray, or finish items that cannot be handled inside a stage, the spray booths provide a dedicated space for that work. This can be especially helpful for fast-paced productions that need set pieces, scenic elements, props, or specialty items prepared on accelerated schedules.

As regulations in Southern California continue to evolve around materials, finishes, and work environments, having appropriate on-lot facilities is an important advantage. The FOX Studio Lot Paint Department helps productions complete necessary paint work efficiently while supporting the needs of modern studio production.

Specialty Finishes That Help Tell the Story

A set may need to look like it has existed for decades. A prop may need scratches, stains, burns, or signs of heavy use. A wall may need to suggest a specific neighborhood, time period, climate, or emotional tone.

The FOX Studio Lot Paint Department helps create those details through custom finishes, textures, aging, distressing, and surface treatments. These finishing touches help make sets and scenic elements feel authentic on camera.

Whether a production needs subtle wear, bold transformation, realistic aging, or a specialty finish, the department can help achieve the right look.

Who We Support

The FOX Studio Lot Paint Department works with a wide range of production partners across the studio lot. That includes production teams, art departments, construction departments, scenic painters, set decorators, prop teams, commercial crews, and specialty production teams.

Because each department has different needs, the Paint Department is built to be flexible. An art department may need a custom color match or finish sample. A construction department may need paint support for a set build. A scenic team may need spray booth access for a specialty item. A production team may need quick turnaround on last-minute changes before filming begins.

By offering on-lot paint support, the department helps streamline communication and reduce delays. Productions can coordinate directly with an experienced team that understands studio timelines, production workflows, and the importance of getting every detail camera-ready.

Decades of Studio Paint Experience

Carlos Ochoa has seen the FOX Studio Lot Paint Department evolve across nearly three decades on the lot. Over the years, he has supported productions through changing technology, new regulations, evolving workflows, and the increasing speed of modern production.

One of his early memories includes working on NYPD Blue, where he mixed paint daily to help transform sections of the lot into city environments that appeared much larger on camera. That hands-on experience helped him develop a deep understanding of color matching, paint mixing, and production-driven problem solving.

Today, that experience continues to support productions working at the FOX Studio Lot.
